Siren
Siren came from an unexpected moment. A rare summer aurora appeared during the Perseid meteor shower over Lake Michigan, matching my planned laser experiments.
Unlike my earlier work with geometric precision, these forms respond to their environment rather than control it. Each image captures drone-mounted laser light moving naturally as it meets waves on shore. As a result, the water’s movement shapes the light, creating patterns visible only through long exposure.
The work recalls both the careful documentation of Bernd and Hilla Becher and the mysterious quality of early spirit photography. However, this study differs by capturing changes at a single location. These forms each respond differently to their conditions. Together, they create a sequence that feels both ordered and mysterious.
In the end, this work marks a turning point in the Aeroglyphs series. Here, light becomes less structured and more natural, suggesting something both elemental and alive.
